“Hallo, hoe gaan dit, my friende??”
I hope you’re all doing really well! Already one month in South Africa, which seems to be a good moment to give you an update about my experiences in this wonderful new continent! Only one month in South Africa and I have already seen so much of the country, met so many new people, heard so many new stories and indeed, I already settled pretty well in my new home for the next 5 months: Stellenbosch.
However, I started this new adventure in Johannesburg, or “Jozi”, as the South Africans use to call it. After an emergency-stop in Durban due to heavy thunder-storms above Johannesburg and after two nights in a quite hostel just outside the centre of the city, to overcome my jet-lag, I drove to the nation’s capital: Pretoria. I met up with Josine, a friend of mine from the Netherlands who’s doing an internship at the Academic Hospital overthere: we did some sight-seeing and had a great time together!
Asking me about the first things that stroke me upon my arrival in South Africa, I would say the inequality between the Black and the White population, which is visible everywhere around you, and the feeling of insecurity, strengthened by the huge fences around each house with electric barbwire and the “Armed Response-signs” attached to it. Walking, or rather: driving more safely in a taxi, on the streets of Pretoria you will only see black people hanging around at almost every corner, but once you entered a shopping-mall, a restaurant or a pub-district 99% of the people has become white…
Because I wanted to see at least something of the country, I decided to book a Greyhound-bus instead of a plane to cross the entire country on my way to Cape Town. The 20-hour drive was definitely worth it: I had some nice company and saw the landscape changing from wide green fields around Johannesburg into rough winefields in the middle of impressive mountains around Cape Town. Five days after my arrival in South Africa, I already reached my destination for this semester: Stellenbosch, a very peaceful, clean, white, (too-) crowded with Dutch, Americans and Germans, safe, beautiful and historical university-town, well-known as the centre of the wine-region of the Western Cape. I was right on time for the introduction-week, which turned out to be an excellent opportunity to meet a lot of new people and to explore everything Stellenbosch has to offer. During this semester, I will stay at the biggest of about five residences/campuses, called “Acadmia”. Although the room seemed to be a bit depressing at first instance, right now I decorated it a bit and I have realized the advantages of living so close to all of your fellow-students and the services offered on-campus.
I’m aware that I will make some of you (really) jealous right now, but I’m gonna tell it anyway: the weather is every single day beau-ti-ful: sunshine, 30-40 degrees Celsius, a fresh air during the whole day and once in two weeks a refreshing rain :) I was already told that in the first weeks, THE social event is the so-called “braai”, or barbeque as we use to call them. Let me tell you how this works: somebody is “giving a braai” and everybody is invited to bring his own meat and drinks, which is an ideal way to meet new people and to have a lot of fun! Something more worrying are the “power-cuts”, which is unfortunately the reality of every day life in South Africa and turns out to be desastrous for its economy. Due to negligence of previous governments, South Africa, responsible for delivering electricity to 8 surrounding countries (!), has simply run out of it. Except for hospitals, schools and other “vital” institutions, the whole country is without electricity for a couple of hours, sometimes every day of the week, according to an on-line schedule. Although it might seem charming to shop in a supermarket enlighted by candles only or to look out over Cape Town without any single light burning, it is most of all very annoying and it seems to be even a threat for the World Cup Soccer in 2010…
Alright, ready for some positive stories now?? South Africa has proven to be a country of unlimited opportunities, when it comes down to travelling, adventures, sporting, going out and… enjoying life in general! The ideal way of getting around here is by renting a car and since my arrival we have already made several trips, including two road-trips for four days. During the first one, we drove towards the well-known and magnificant “Garden Route” with a group of five friends: we slept in the nicest hostels, drove along amazing coast-lines, went out in local bars, raced on ostriches at a farm in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich-capital of the world and did….., yes, we really did: the 3-2-1-BUNGEEEEE!!! Undesribable: what a feeling and what an adrenaline!! Last weekend we drove with two cars up to the West-Coast, towards the less-touristic “Cederberg Mountains” where we spent one day at the beach in Langebaan and planned to hike the other day in the beautiful area. Initially, the hike should have taken us about 4-5 hours, but… 9 hours later and 15 kilometres out of direction, in the middle-of-nowhere we entered an isolated big farm to ask for directions underneath the burning sun. A South African family with a lot of young children and animals were just drinking wine, playing in the garden and… they totally made our day! First, they drove us to their private pool, gave us clean towels, invited us to join them for dinner (yes, indeed, for the “braai”!), offered us the nicest wine from the region and drove us all the way back to our car… talking about hospitality, super!
In the meanwhile, live goes on in Stellenbosch and because the work that I will have to do for university seems to be…. uhmm, how shall I put this…. not too much ;-), I dediced to just enjoy life as much as I can while I’m here! The University’s sporting facilities are great: I play tennis on a regular basis, I go jogging in the evening, I will have a squash-tournament tomorrow and having a swim in the pool has already become a routine. Furthermore, I joined the surfing club, which means that we’re going two times a week to the nearest beach with a group of 30 (mainly international-) students to learn how to “ride the waves” and just this morning, I had my first scuba-dive, because we’re taking a course to get our “NAUI-diving-license”. In the weekends, we often take the car and drive to one of the beautiful beaches nearby, to explore the area around Stellenbosch or to visit Cape Town, which is only 35 minutes away from here. Oh, almost forgot, Cape Town… well, what can I say: it is just as beautiful as everybody told me beforehand! The atmosphere is great (much safer than in Pretoria and Jozi), you can see Table Mountain from everywhere and the beach-line surrounding it makes it indeed one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen!! How luxuous, to be only half an hour away from there, while the well-known historical “Cape of Good Hope” has proven to be worth a day-trip as well. Let me finish by telling you about some plans for the near future: in the end of March, during spring-break we’re going to visit Jo’burg (again), we’ll visit the famous Kruger Park to spot the “Big Five” and we’ll be crossing the border to enter scuba-dive-paradise, Mozambique. Futhermore, we’re planning to visit a big rugby-game in the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town with some locals next week, being the national sport together with cricket.

Je maakt me wederom weer poepie jaloers hoor! Leuk om te zien dat wij ongeveer 50% van onze foto's nu hetzelde zijn mbt Zuid Afrika, Cape Town/Stellenbosch!! Erg stoer hoor dat jumpen, mij niet gezien;)
Kijk weer uit naar je volgende update! Zal je binnenkort eens bellen, ben alleen echt poepie druk de laatste tijd maar ik moet er gewoon even tijd voor maken;)!!

Hey lieve Marijn,
Wat een toffe verhalen... Klinkt echt als (weer) een onvergetelijke tijd. En dus toch de introductieweek gedaan, een goede keuze zo te horen!
De jaloezie komt wel boven als ik je avonturen zo lees en de foto's zie, wat een natuur & toffe dingen om te doen, struisvogel rijden..?! Gelukkig hoef je (ook weer) niet te hard te werken en heb je alle tijd om volop te genieten.
Ik hoop dat het zo geweldig blijft, want voor je het weet is het weer voorbij!

Wow! Sounds so beautiful and amazing! Montreal is fairly warm for winter and I'm taking Oral and Written French II intensive this semester as well. It's a lot harder than the first one! We're on our "Spring Break" but I had so much work to do that it's really a study time week for me. I am so jealous of how much fun you're having! Don't forget us kids from French class! -

Geen verkeerd begin van het avontuur hoor! Zag net nog mijn bungee-jump video staan; is inderdaad echt top. Mocht 't er nog van komen, dan zou ik jou ook zeker aanraden een skydive te maken. Maar goed, aan activiteiten blijkbaar geen tekort!

Was ik maar rechten gaan doen..! Ik heb het hier nog altijd naar mijn zin hoor in Pretoria (ook zonder prachtig strand en wijnvelden zoals daar bij jou..) maar chirurgie is helaas niet te vergelijken met de vakantie die jij daar viert! Nog twee weekjes blokken voor mij en kan ik weer gaan proberen net zo van het leven te genieten als jij nu doet :). Wou dat ik nog ff langs kon komen, maar dat gaat dus echt niet lukken.. Wou dat het kon, want je verhalen en foto's maken het wel errug aantrekkelijk! Maar eind maart ben ik ook aan het reizen, dus misschien dat onze wegen elkaar dan nog wel kruisen en ik je nog ff een knuffel kan geven voor ik je weer 3 maanden niet meer zie..!
Alvast een knuffel via internet en ik zou zeggen ga vooral zo door met van het leven genieten! X Jozi ;) -

Everything is in Dutch. It makes me so confused on this webpage. Sounds like you are having an awesome time and we (me and Michelle) miss everyone so much. While you are out there enjoying all the beautiful sunshine and oceans, it snows pretty much every single day here. Well at least 3 out 4 days. And then we have a huge snowstorm about every 2 weeks. I have lived here for so long and rarely seen so much snow pile up in the streets. However, I haven't fallen yet!! Graduation is just around the corner and I can't wait...except for the thousands of papers I have to write before I get there....eeek!
Excited for the next update.

Na het lezen van je verslag, het zien van de foto's en de verhalen van je moeder kan ik me goed voorstellen dat je het reuze naar je zin hebt en je ouders erna uit kijken om je bezoeken.

My apologies for replying late. The team is doing well, it came second in the Ontario Universities Athletics(OUA) competition. Yea, we're the second best team in Canada, isn't that awesome!!
Nice to see your having fun, Montreal is as usual cold right now but spring is almost here. In Canada they say during the winters trees shed leaves and during the summers girls shed their clothes ;)
